🔥 Igniting Windows Server Power: Update for MDM & Intune Integration! 🔥
Thanks to the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Security Management feature, Windows Servers can receive Intune security management policies, providing you with better control and security for your devices.
No longer will you be left in the dark, grappling with the ambiguous "Windows" label for your Windows Server devices. We're revolutionising device management by improving visibility, targeting, and overall efficiency in managing these devices.
🌟 How it works?
With the Intune May (2305) service-side release, your Windows Server devices will no longer be labeled as "Windows" but rather as "Windows Server" for the OS platform. This means you'll be able to view, filter, and create groups of devices containing only Windows Servers or exclusively Windows clients for better targeting and reporting.
🔧 Changes you can expect
"Windows Server" will replace "Windows" as the OS platform attribute for Windows Server devices, applying to Intune, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, and Azure Active Directory (Azure AD).
A new deviceType value "Windows Server" will be introduced alongside the existing "Windows" deviceType.
This update applies to the following platforms:
🖥️ Windows:
Windows 10 Professional/Enterprise (with KB5006738)
Windows 11 Professional/Enterprise
🖥️ Windows Server:
Windows Server 2012 R2 with Microsoft Defender for Down-Level Devices
Windows Server 2016 with Microsoft Defender for Down-Level Devices
Windows Server 2019 (with KB5006744)
Windows Server 2022 (with KB5006745)
🛠️ Preparing for the change
If you have Windows Server devices configured in your tenant, anticipate an update to "Windows Server" in your reporting views.
For custom scripts referencing the Windows platform, make sure to update them to include the new "Windows Server" value for deviceType.
If you're using Azure AD dynamic device groups with rules referencing "Windows," update the dynamic group rules to include Windows Servers specifically. For example, if you have rules that use the "equals" or "not equals" operator, update the rule to reference "Windows Server." If your rules use the "contains" or "like" operator, the rule won’t be impacted.
